Hair Restoration: Understanding The Different Procedures And The Best One for You

The global hair restoration business is booming. According to market research, the industry recorded nearly $5 billion in business in 2021 alone. It is estimated that this figure will rise even further to $30 billion by 2030. So, why is the hair restoration business recording so much financial success? The answer is simple: quality of service and trust.

So, what are your options and how do they help your hair restoration aspirations? Well, here is an explainer.

Hair restoration is a precise, delicate process, however, modern technology and equipment have not only significantly reduced the risk, but have improved outcomes. A good example of this is the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair surgery, which has been a game-changer for the industry, particularly for Afro hair.  But before FUE, there was the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT).

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a minimally invasive surgery that helps cover bald patches on your head caused by hair loss. In this procedure, the surgeon cuts a strip of skin from the back or side of your head to extract hair follicles. These hair follicles are then placed into the balding areas of your head. This procedure is most effective for addressing receding hairlines caused by Male Pattern Baldness.

Like modern transplant procedures, you get natural-looking hair afterwards. However, this procedure leaves a scar on your scalp and in recent years, the FUT has been losing its place to the less-invasive Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

FUE builds upon the foundations laid by FUT and enhances the technique of extracting hair follicles. In FUE, individual follicles are directly taken from the donor area (usually the back of the head — that region of the head is shaved and the hair follicles extracted in a painless process) using a specialized punch tool. Unlike FUT, there’s no need to cut the skin on your scalp, and you are not left with a scar.

This method enables the extraction of follicles individually, reducing the risk of scarring and giving you a more natural-looking appearance.

Micro Scalp Pigmentation (MSP)

This image shows a client with a receding hairline before and immediately after the final MSP procedure.

MSPs are generally recommended for our clients who are extensively bald and do not have enough donor hair for a Hair Transplant. The beauty of this procedure is that you can design and create your own hairline – enabling you to look just as you did in your youth! The other benefit is that the results are immediate. You walk out of our clinic with your new look!

With MSP, medical-grade pigments are applied to the scalp to create the appearance of hair follicles or simulate a closely shaved hairstyle. In other words, tattoo-like pigments are applied to the scalp so it appears like a low-cut hairstyle. It is a non-surgical, cosmetic procedure that is primarily used to address the aesthetic concerns of individuals with hair loss or thinning hair.

During an MSP procedure, the technician uses a micro-needle to deposit pigment into the upper layers of the scalp. The pigment is carefully matched to the individual’s natural hair colour and skin tone. This ensures a realistic and seamless result.

By strategically placing the pigments in the areas of thinning or balding, MSP creates the illusion of denser hair or a full head of closely cropped hair. It can be used to address a variety of hair loss conditions, including Male and Female Pattern Baldness, thinning hair and receding hairlines. It can also serve as a camouflage for those with head scars.

Hair Treatments Therapy

Hair Treatments therapy has been widely used in various medical contexts for many years; it is commonly used to heal sports injuries, for example. Recently, its healing properties and abundance of growth factors have been harnessed for use in the hair restoration field.

Hair Treatments is a non-surgical procedure during which a sample of the client’s blood is extracted and subjected to a centrifugation process to concentrate the platelets. It is then injected into the scalp. The growth factors in the platelets stimulate hair growth and improve the thickness and quality of existing hair.

Hair Treatments therapy is frequently used in conjunction with surgical hair restoration procedures or as a standalone treatment for individuals in the early stages of hair loss.

In conclusion, gone are the days when hair treatments were ridiculed as ineffective and visually unappealing, viewed merely as a frivolous expense for aging men in their 50s and 60s. Today, the landscape has changed into a cutting-edge industry that produces remarkable results for a diverse range of clients. The demographic is also now more diverse, as younger men and women, usually between the ages of 25-45, have also begun undergoing hair treatment procedures to address both Male and Female Pattern Baldness. The procedures we have explored here have played a pivotal role in advancing the field of hair restoration to its current state.
